The Ballarat West Employment Zone is expected to create up to 9000 jobs and inject $5 billion per annum into the Ballarat economy.
BWEZ is the region’s engine room for jobs and economic growth over the next 20 years, and is designed to support business innovation and business productivity.
It is a staged development of 438 hectares of land adjacent to the Ballarat Airport as a high-quality industrial estate for a range of manufacturing, agribusiness, construction, freight and logistics, and research and development uses. It will include large lots, a freight hub, access for high-productivity freight vehicles and top-quality infrastructure.
The City of Ballarat has been working on BWEZ for five years in partnership with Regional Development Victoria and Major Projects Victoria. It is part of the City of Ballarat’s exciting plans to develop the Ballarat economy to meet the employment and service needs of the city’s growing population.
The project budget for BWEZ Stage 1 is $30.169 million. Regional Development Victoria has allocated $25.169 million and the City of Ballarat has delivered $5 million.
The BWEZ Stage 1 land release of up to 60.1 hectares received strong interest from the market and negotiations are continuing with other respondents.
Submissions for the BWEZ Freight Hub EOI are currently being evaluated.
Freight Hub – an intermodal facility catering for road-based high performance freight vehicles (HPFV). EOI currenty being evaluated.
Ballarat Link Road– a new HPFV road linking BWEZ to the Western Freeway and the port. Stages 1A, 1C and 1D completed. Stage 1B underway with completion expected in 2018.
Bio Economy Innovation/ Research and Development Centre– will secure Ballarat’s role in high value manufacturing, research and development. It will support industry transition and innovation, and will support companies to refine and develop technologies in the industrial Bio Economy space.
Waste to Energy Plant– will reduce energy costs to ensure a more cost-competitive environment for businesses and a sustainable solution to the region’s waste.
