2018 Commonwealth Games batonbearers announced for Ballarat

Baton will arrive in Ballarat.

Ballarat’s batonbearers for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) Queen’s Baton Relay have today been announced.

Ballarat’s Monique Ford and 16-year-old Corey Loader will form part of the team of batonbearers who will carry the Queen’s Baton during the 100-day countdown to GC2018.

Across the community, hundreds of people will get the opportunity to engage with the baton as it spends quality time in the region.

The baton will arrive in Ballarat on February 13, 2018.

From youngsters to some of Australia’s most accomplished legends, the Queen’s Baton Relay recognises the achievements and aspirations of Australians from all walks of life.

Ballarat batonbearer Monique Ford, who is well-known in the Ballarat community for her volunteer work, has been a foster-carer for seven children over the last eight years, works with therapy dogs at local nursing homes, holds cooking classes for disadvantaged children, and regularly provides her time to the local school canteens.

Ballarat Scout Corey Loader will also join Ballarat’s batonbearer team.

Corey has spent much of his youth inspiring the community to support the less fortunate, and has recently helped raise awareness for victims of the Queensland floods by collecting donations.

Collectively across the country, batonbearers will take more than a million steps to bring the Baton to its final destination, the GC2018 Games’ Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018.

The uniquely designed Baton starts its Australian journey on 25 December 2017.

Since its launch from Buckingham Palace on 13 March, the baton has travelled across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe. Currently it is in Malaysia and is set to visit the remaining 15 Commonwealth nations in Asia and Oceania before arriving in Brisbane on Christmas Eve.
