Smarter Parking in Ballarat

How do I use the new parking meters?

Smarter Parking

Pay with coins

  1. Add your rego into the parking meter, then hit OK.

  2. Now you need to tell us whether you’re parking on the street or in an off-street carpark.
If you’re not parking in an off-street carpark, select on-street and hit OK.
If you’re parking in an off-street carpark, such as the Peel Street, select the name of carpark you are located. Then hit OK.

  3. If you are going to be less than an hour, you won't have to pay. But you will need to hit the ‘complete’ button to secure your one hour of free parking for the day.

  4. If you plan to stay longer than the free hour, select the 'pay for more time' option and then select the pay by coin option.
You will still get your one hour of free parking on top of the time you’re about to pay for.

  5. Insert your coins and select OK. You will notice you can see how long you’ve paid for on the screen.

  6. There’s just one more step.
Now you will be asked whether or not you would like a receipt. If you select yes, you will be given a four-digit number that you can use to download a receipt from my-receipt.com
If you choose to download your receipt, you can register your email while you’re online. This means that every time you select to receive a receipt on a parking meter, you will be emailed a copy of the receipt.

  7. You’re done! There is no need to return to the machine unless you want to insert more coins to extend your stay.  You can also pay for more time using the CellOPark app.

You can cancel at any time.

You do not need to log off or hit stop on any parking meter when you leave.

You will not be charged any more than you have already paid for at the parking meter.

Using the CellOPark app

  1. Download the CellOPark app using your smartphone. You have the option to download the free version, or the premium version for $1.99 per month.

  1. Set up your account by linking your registration number (you can link multiple cars) and payment details. Now you’re ready to start using the app.

  1. Once you’ve parked, open the app on your phone.
If your smartphone’s ‘location services’ is enabled, the app will know where you’ve parked. So, your first step is to confirm your location. If it’s not enabled, you will need to select your location.

  1. Now, hit the start button to begin your session. You will only start to pay for parking after your first hour of free parking has ended.

  1. When you get back to your car, remember to hit stop. Otherwise you’ll continue to pay for parking.

  1. That’s it!

Your questions answered

We get it, parking can be confusing.
We’ve had lots of great questions about how the new parking meters and CellOPark app work. Let’s see if we can help answer those questions for you

Q: Talk me through the one hour of free parking?

The good news is you get to park for one hour for free every day.

You can park anywhere in the CBD and move between car parks during this one hour as often as you like.
All you need to do to claim your free hour is add your rego into a parking meter, or press start once you’ve set up the CellOPark app.

Q: Where can I park all day for $6.50 or less?

Your first hour of parking in the CBD is free, per day, per vehicle. You must sign into a parking meter or the CellOPark app to claim this free hour.

You can also park free for two hours at the Eastwood Street car park (near Coles and Safeway), the Curtis Street (Big W) car park and at the Central Square car park. You do not need to sign into any parking meters or the app in these areas.

Looking for free all-day parking? We’ve got you covered at Eastern Oval on Scott Parade. Parking at the Creswick Road car park is also free. You do not need to sign into any parking meters or the app in these areas.

All-day parking is capped at $6.50 per day at the Field Street, Anderson Street and Peel Street car parks. Here your first hour is free, then $3 per hour (capped at $6.50).

The Doveton Street car park is $3 per hour.

Q: I don’t have a smartphone, so how can I pay to park?

No worries, you can still use coins to pay for parking.
You’ll find a mix of coin and card meters and card-only meters around the CBD.  Just follow the signs on the ground to find your nearest coin-operated machine. You can also check out the map above.

Q: Do I need to press STOP to end every parking session?

If you used a parking meter – no, you do not need to return to a parking meter to end your session. The parking meters are pre-paid, so you only pay for the time you want to stay in the CBD for. Then, when you're finished your parking session, just drive away.

If you are using the CellOPark app – yes, you need to remember to hit ‘stop’ to end your session. Unlike the meters, your fee is calculated at the end of your stay (after you press ‘stop’ in the app) and is then charged to your nominated credit or debit card.

Q: Let’s talk about disability parking permits?

The good news is nothing has changed for those with disability parking permits.

Blue permit holders can park in any car park (including off-street car parks) for free all day.
You can also park in a time-restricted parking spots for twice as long as the signs indication, for free!
You do not need to add your rego into a parking meter, but we’d appreciate it if you could (if it’s convenient).

Everyone with a green permit gets their first hour of parking free, then can stay for double the time they pay for. You must add your rego into a parking meter.

Our parking officers will still be on-foot checking for your permit.
